逄蒙学射于羿，Pang Meng learned archery of Yi.
尽羿之道，思天下惟羿为愈己，When he had acquired completely all the science of Yi, he thought that in all the kingdom only Yi was superior to himself,
于是杀羿。 and so he slew him.
孟子曰：“是亦羿有罪焉。”Mencius said, 'In this case Yi also was to blame.
公明仪曰： Gong Meng Yi indeed said,
“宜若无罪焉。” "It would appear as if he were not to be blamed,"
曰：“薄乎云尔， but he thereby only meant that his blame was slight.
恶得无罪？ How can he be held without any blame?
郑人使子濯孺子侵卫， The people of Chang sent Zi Zhuo Ru to make a stealthy attack on Wei,
卫使庾公之斯追之。 which sent Yu Gong Zhi to pursue him.
子濯孺子曰： Zi Zhuo Ru said,
‘今日我疾作， "To-day I feel unwell,
不可以执弓， so that I cannot hold my bow.
吾死矣夫！’ I am a dead man!"
问其仆曰： At the same time he asked his driver,
‘追我者谁也？’ "Who is it that is pursuing me?"
其仆曰： The driver said,
‘庾公之斯也。’ "It is Yu Gong Si,"
曰：on which, he exclaimed,
‘吾生矣。’ "I shall live."
其仆曰： The driver said,
‘庾公之斯，卫之善射者也， "Yu Gong Si is the best archer of Wei,
夫子曰“吾生”，何谓也？’ what do you mean by saying 'I shall live?'"
曰： Yu replied,
‘庾公之斯学射于尹公之他， "Yu Gong Si learned archery from Yin Gong Tuo,
尹公之他学射于我。 who again learned it from me.
夫尹公之他，端人也，Now, Yin Gong Tuo is an upright man,
其取友必端矣。’ and the friends of his selection must be upright also."
庾公之斯至， When Yu Gong Si came up,
曰： he said,
‘夫子何为不执弓？’"Master, why are you not holding your bow?"
曰： Yu answered him,
‘今日我疾作， "To-day I am feeling unwell,
不可以执弓。’ and cannot hold my bow."
曰： On this Si said,
‘小人学射于尹公之他， "I learned archery from Yin Gong Tuo,
尹公之他学射于夫子。 who again learned it from you.
我不忍以夫子之道反害夫子。I cannot bear to injure you with your own science.
虽然，今日之事，The business of to-day, however,
君事也， is the prince's business,
我不敢废。’ which I dare not neglect."
抽矢扣轮，去其金，He then took his arrows, knocked off their steel points against the carriage-wheel,
发乘矢而后反。”discharged four of them, and returned.
