孟子曰：Mencius said,
「莫非命也， 'There is an appointment for everything.
順受其正。 A man should receive submissively what may be correctly ascribed thereto.
是故知命者，Therefore, he who has the true idea of what is Heaven's appointment
不立乎巖牆之下。 will not stand beneath a precipitous wall.
盡其道而死者，Death sustained in the discharge of one's duties
正命也。 may correctly be ascribed to the appointment of Heaven.
桎梏死者，Death under handcuffs and fetters
非正命也。」 cannot correctly be so ascribed.'
