儒家 -> 孟子 -> 盡心上 -> 23

孟子曰：Mencius said,
「易其田疇， 'Let it be seen to that their fields of grain and hemp are well cultivated,
薄其稅斂， and make the taxes on them light
民可使富也。- so the people may be made rich.
食之以時， Let it be seen to that the people use their resources of food seasonably,
用之以禮， and expend their wealth only on the prescribed ceremonies
財不可勝用也。- so their wealth will be more than can be consumed.
民非水火不生活， The people cannot live without water and fire,
昏暮叩人之門戶， yet if you knock at a man's door in the dusk of the evening,
求水火， and ask for water and fire,
無弗與者， there is no man who will not give them,
至足矣。 such is the abundance of these things.
聖人治天下，A sage governs the kingdom
使有菽粟如水火。 so as to cause pulse and grain to be as abundant as water and fire.
菽粟如水火， When pulse and grain are as abundant as water and fire,
而民焉有不仁者乎？」 how shall the people be other than virtuous?'
