孟子曰：Mencius said,
“有人曰：'There are men who say
‘我善为陈， "I am skilful at marshalling troops,
我善为战。’ I am skilful at conducting a battle!"
大罪也。They are great criminals.
国君好仁， If the ruler of a State love benevolence,
天下无敌焉。 he will have no enemy in the kingdom.
南面而征北狄怨，When Tang was executing his work of correction in the south, the rude tribes on the north murmured.
东面而征西夷怨。When he was executing it in the east, the rude tribes on the west murmured.
曰：‘奚为后我？’Their cry was "Why does he make us last?"
武王之伐殷也， When king Wu punished Yin,
革车三百两， he had only three hundred chariots of war,
虎贲三千人。 and three thousand life-guards.
王曰： The king said,
‘无畏！ "Do not fear.
宁尔也， Let me give you repose.
非敌百姓也。’ I am no enemy to the people!"
若崩厥角稽首。On this, they bowed their heads to the earth, like the horns of animals falling off.
征之为言正也， "Royal correction" is but another word for rectifying.
各欲正己也， Each State wishing itself to be corrected,
焉用战？” what need is there for fighting?'
