子曰：The Master said,
“教民亲爱， "For teaching the people to be affectionate and loving,
莫善于孝。 there is nothing better than filial piety.
教民礼顺， For teaching them (the observance of) propriety and submissiveness,
莫善于悌。 there is nothing better than fraternal duty.
移风易俗， For changing their manners and altering their customs,
莫善于乐。 there is nothing better than music.
安上治民， For securing the repose of superiors and the good order of the people,
莫善于礼。 there is nothing better than the rules of propriety.
礼者，敬而已矣。The rules of propriety are simply (the development of) the principle of reverence.
故敬其父，Therefore the reverence paid to a father
则子悦； makes (all) sons pleased.
敬其兄，The reverence paid to an elder brother
则弟悦； makes (all) younger brothers pleased.
敬其君，The reverence paid to a ruler
则臣悦； makes (all) subjects pleased.
敬一人，The reverence paid to the One man
而千万人悦。 makes thousands and myriads of men pleased.
所敬者寡， The reverence is paid to a few,
而悦者众， and the pleasure extends to many.
此之谓要道也。” This is what is meant by an 'All-embracing Rule of Conduct.'"
