乃命羲和，He commanded the Xis and Hes,
钦若昊天， in reverent accordance with (their observation of) the wide heavens,
历象日月星辰，to calculate and delineate (the movements and appearances of) the sun, the moon, the stars, and the zodiacal spaces,
敬授人时。 and so to deliver respectfully the seasons to be observed by the people.
分命羲仲，He separately commanded the second brother Xi
宅嵎夷， to reside at Yu-yi,
曰旸谷。 in what was called the Bright Valley,
寅宾出日， and (there) respectfully to receive as a guest the rising sun,
平秩东作。 and to adjust and arrange the labours of the spring.
日中，'The day,' (said he), 'is of the medium length,
星鸟， and the star is in Niao
以殷仲春。- you may thus exactly determine mid-spring.
厥民析， The people are dispersed (in the fields),
鸟兽孳尾。 and birds and beasts breed and copulate.'
申命羲叔，He further commanded the third brother Xi
宅南交。to reside at Nan-jiao, (in what was called the Brilliant Capital).
平秩南讹， to adjust and arrange the transformations of the summer,
敬致。 and respectfully-to observe the exact limit (of the shadow).
日永，'The day,' (said he), 'is at its longest,
星火， and the star is in Huo
以正仲夏。- you may thus exactly determine mid-summer.
厥民因， The people are more dispersed;
鸟兽希革。and birds and beasts have their feathers and hair thin, and change their coats.'
分命和仲，He separately commanded the second brother He
宅西， to reside at the west,
曰昧谷。 in what was called the Dark Valley,
寅饯纳日， and (there) respectfully to convoy the setting sun,
平秩西成。 and to adjust and arrange the completing labours of the autumn.
宵中，'The night' (said he), 'is of the medium length,
星虚， and the star is in Xu
以殷仲秋。- you may thus exactly determine mid-autumn.
厥民夷， The people feel at ease,
鸟兽毛毨。 and birds and beasts have their coats in good condition.'
申命和叔，He further commanded the third brother He
宅朔方， to reside in the northern region,
曰幽都。 in what was called the Sombre Capital,
平在朔易。 and (there) to adjust and examine the changes of the winter.
日短，'The day,' (said he), 'is at its shortest,
星昴， and the star is in Mao
以正仲冬。- you may thus exactly determine mid-winter.
厥民隩，The people, keep in their houses,
鸟兽氄毛。 and the coats of birds and beasts are downy and thick.'
帝曰：The Di said,
“咨！ 'Ah!
汝羲暨和。you, Xis and Hes,
朞三百有六旬有六日，a round year consists of three hundred, sixty, and six days.
以闰月定四时，Do you, by means of the intercalary month, fix the four seasons,
成岁。 and complete (the period of) the year.
允厘百工，(Thereafter), the various officers being regulated,
庶绩咸熙。”in accordance with this, all the works (of the year) will be fully performed.'
