王曰：The king (then) said,
「古人有言曰： 'The ancients have said,
『牝雞無晨； "The hen does not announce the morning.
牝雞之晨，The crowing of a hen in the morning
惟家之索。』 (indicates) the subversion of the family."
今商王受惟婦言是用，Now Shou, the king of Shang, follows only the words of his wife.
昏棄厥肆祀弗答，In his blindness he has neglected the sacrifices which he ought to offer, and makes no response (for the favours that he has received);
昏棄厥遺王父母弟不迪，he has also cast off his paternal and maternal relations, not treating them properly.
乃惟四方之多罪逋逃，They are only the vagabonds from all quarters, loaded with crimes,
是崇是長， whom he honours and exalts,
是信是使， whom he employs and trusts,
是以為大夫卿士。 making them great officers and high nobles,
俾暴虐于百姓， so that they can tyrannize over the people,
以奸宄于商邑。 and exercise their villainies in the cities of Shang.
