王曰：The king said,
“公！ 'O duke,
予小子其退，let me, the little child, return
即辟于周， to my sovereignty in Zhou,
命公后。and I charge you, O duke, to remain behind (here).
四方迪乱未定， Order has been initiated throughout the four quarters of the kingdom,
于宗礼亦未克敉， but the ceremonies to be honoured (by general observance) have not yet been settled,
公功迪将， and I cannot look on your service as completed.
其后监我士师工，Commence on a great scale what is to be done by your remaining here, setting an example to my officers
诞保文武受民， and greatly preserving the people whom Wen and Wu received;
乱为四辅。” by your good government you will be a help to the whole kingdom.'
王曰：The king said,
“公定，'Remain, O duke.
予往已。 I will certainly go.
公功肃将祗欢， Your services are devoutly acknowledged and reverently rejoiced in.
公无困哉！Do not, O duke, occasion me this difficulty.
我惟无斁其康事， I on my part will not be weary in seeking the tranquillity (of the people);
公勿替刑， do not let the example which you have afforded me be intermitted.
四方其世享。” So shall the kingdom enjoy for generations (the benefit of your virtue).'
