周公曰：The duke of Zhou said,
「嗚呼！ 'Oh!
我聞曰：I have heard
昔在殷王中宗，that aforetime Zhong Zong, one of the kings of Yin,
嚴恭寅畏，was grave, humble, reverential, and timorously cautious.
天命自度，He measured himself with reference to the decree of Heaven,
治民祗懼， and cherished a reverent apprehension in governing the people,
不敢荒寧。 not daring to indulge in useless ease.
肆中宗之享國七十有五年。 It was thus that he enjoyed the throne seventy and five years.
其在高宗， If we come to the time of Gao Zong,
時舊勞于外， he toiled at first away from the court,
爰暨小人。 and was among the lower people.
作其即位， When he came to the throne,
乃或亮陰， and occupied the mourning shed,
三年不言。 it may be said that he did not speak for three years.
其惟不言， (Afterwards) he was (still inclined) not to speak;
言乃雍。but when he did speak, his words were full of harmonious (wisdom).
不敢荒寧， He did not dare to indulge in useless ease,
嘉靖殷邦。 but admirably and tranquilly presided over the regions of Yin,
至于小大，till throughout them all, small and great,
無時或怨。 there was not a single murmur.
肆高宗之享國五十年有九年。 It was thus that he enjoyed the throne fifty and nine years.
其在祖甲， In the case of Zu-jia,
不義惟王， he refused to be king unrighteously,
舊為小人。 and was at first one of the lower people.
作其即位， When he came to the throne,
爰知小人之依， he knew on what they must depend (for their support),
能保惠于庶民， and was able to exercise a protecting kindness towards their masses,
不敢侮鰥寡。 and did not dare to treat with contempt the wifeless men and widows.
肆祖甲之享國三十有三年。 Thus it was that he enjoyed the throne thirty and three years.
自時厥後立王， The kings that arose after these,
生則逸， from their birth enjoyed ease.
生則逸， Enjoying ease from their birth,
不知稼穡之艱難， they did not know the painful toil of sowing and reaping,
不聞小人之勞， and had not heard of the hard labours of the lower people.
惟耽樂之從。 They sought for nothing but excessive pleasure;
自時厥後，亦罔或克壽。 and so not one of them had long life.
或十年， They (reigned) for ten years,
或七八年， for seven or eight,
或五六年， for five or six,
或四三年。」 or perhaps (only) for three or four.'
