鲁有兀者王骀，In Lu there was a Wang Tai who had lost both his feet;
从之游者，while his disciples who followed and went about with him
与仲尼相若。 were as numerous as those of Zhongni.
常季问于仲尼曰：Chang Ji asked Zhongni about him, saying,
“王骀，兀者也， 'Though Wang Tai is a cripple,
从之游者，the disciples who follow him about
与夫子中分鲁。divide Lu equally with you, Master.
立不教，When he stands, he does not teach them;
坐不议，when he sits, he does not discourse to them.
虚而往，But they go to him empty,
实而归。 and come back full.
固有不言之教， Is there indeed such a thing as instruction without words?
无形而心成者邪？and while the body is imperfect, may the mind be complete?
是何人也？”What sort of man is he?'
仲尼曰： Zhongni replied,
“夫子，圣人也。 'This master is a sage.
丘也，直后而未往耳。I have only been too late in going to him.
丘将以为师，而况不如丘者乎！I will make him my teacher; and how much more should those do so who are not equal to me!
奚假鲁国！Why should only the state of Lu follow him?
丘将引天下而与从之。”I will lead on all under heaven with me to do so.'
常季曰：Chang Ji rejoined,
“彼兀者也， 'He is a man who has lost his feet,
而王先生，and yet he is known as the venerable Wang
其与庸亦远矣。 - he must be very different from ordinary men.
若然者，其用心也，独若之何？” What is the peculiar way in which he employs his mind?'
仲尼曰： The reply was,
“死生亦大矣， 'Death and life are great considerations,
而不得与之变， but they could work no change in him.
虽天地覆坠， Though heaven and earth were to be overturned and fall,
亦将不与之遗。 they would occasion him no loss.
审乎无假， His judgment is fixed regarding that in which there is no element of falsehood;
而不与物迁，and, while other things change, he changes not.
命物之化， The transformations of things are to him the developments prescribed for them,
而守其宗也。” and he keeps fast hold of the author of them.'
常季曰：Chang Ji said,
“何谓也？” 'What do you mean?'
仲尼曰：“自其异者视之，'When we look at things,' said Zhongni, 'as they differ, we see them to be different,
肝胆楚越也；(as for instance) the liver and the gall, or Chu and Yue;
自其同者视之，when we look at them, as they agree,
万物皆一也。 we see them all to be a unity.
夫若然者， So it is with this (Wang Tai).
且不知耳目之所宜， He takes no knowledge of the things for which his ears and eyes are the appropriate organs,
而游心于德之和， but his mind delights itself in the harmony of (all excellent) qualities.
物视其所一， He looks at the unity which belongs to things,
而不见其所丧， and does not perceive where they have suffered loss.
视丧其足，犹遗土也。” He looks on the loss of his feet as only the loss of so much earth.'
常季曰：Chang Ji said,
“彼为己， 'He is entirely occupied with his (proper) self.
以其知得其心， By his knowledge he has discovered (the nature of) his mind,
以其心得其常心， and to that he holds as what is unchangeable;
物何为最之哉？” but how is it that men make so much of him?'
仲尼曰： The reply was,
“人莫鉴于流水， 'Men do not look into running water as a mirror,
而鉴于止水，but into still water
唯止能止众止。- it is only the still water that can arrest them all, and keep them (in the contemplation of their real selves).
受命于地， Of things which are what they are by the influence of the earth,
唯松柏独也在，it is only the pine and cypress which are the best instances
冬夏青青； - in winter as in summer brightly green.
受命于天， Of those which were what they were by the influence of Heaven,
唯舜独也正， the most correct examples were Yao and Shun;
幸能正生， fortunate in (thus) maintaining their own life correct,
以正众生。 and so as to correct the lives of others.
夫保始之徵，As a verification of the (power of) the original endowment, when it has been preserved,
不惧之实。take the result of fearlessness
勇士一人，- how the heroic spirit of a single brave soldier
雄入于九军。 has been thrown into an army of nine hosts.
将求名而能自要者，而犹若此，If a man only seeking for fame and able in this way to secure it can produce such an effect,
而况官天地， how much more (may we look for a greater result) from one whose rule is over heaven and earth,
府万物， and holds all things in his treasury,
直寓六骸， who simply has his lodging in the six members of his body,
象耳目，whom his ears and eyes serve but as conveying emblematic images of things,
一知之所知， who comprehends all his knowledge in a unity,
而心未尝死者乎！ and whose mind never dies!
彼且择日而登假， If such a man were to choose a day on which he would ascend far on high,
人则从是也。 men would (seek to) follow him there.
彼且何肯以物为事乎！But how should he be willing to occupy himself with other men?
