尧之师曰许由，The teacher of Yao was Xu You;
许由之师曰啮缺，of Xu You, Nie Que;
啮缺之师曰王倪，of Nie Que, Wang Ni;
王倪之师曰被衣。of Wang Ni, Bei-yi.
尧问于许由曰：Yao asked Xu You, saying,
“啮缺可以配天乎？ 'Is Nie Que fit to be the correlate of Heaven?
吾藉王倪以要之。”(If you think he is), I will avail myself of the services of Wang Ni to constrain him (to take my place).'
许由曰： Xu You replied,
“殆哉圾乎天下！'Such a measure would be hazardous, and full of peril to the kingdom!
啮缺之为人也， The character of Nie Que is this
聪明睿知，- he is acute, perspicacious, shrewd and knowing,
给数以敏，ready in reply, sharp in retort, and hasty;
其性过人， his natural (endowments) surpass those of other men,
而又乃以人受天。 but by his human qualities he seeks to obtain the Heavenly gift;
彼审乎禁过， he exercises his discrimination in suppressing his errors,
而不知过之所由生。 but he does not know what is the source from which his errors arise.
与之配天乎？ Make him the correlate of Heaven!
彼且乘人而无天，He would employ the human qualities, so that no regard would be paid to the Heavenly gift.
方且本身而异形，Moreover, he would assign different functions to the different parts of the one person.
方且尊知而火驰，Moreover, honour would be given to knowledge, and he would have his plans take effect with the speed of fire.
方且为绪使，Moreover, he would be the slave of everything he initiated.
方且为物絯，Moreover, he would be embarrassed by things.
方且四顾而物应，Moreover, he would be looking all round for the response of things (to his measures).
方且应众宜，Moreover, he would be responding to the opinion of the multitude as to what was right.
方且与物化而未始有恒。Moreover, he would be changing as things changed, and would not begin to have any principle of constancy.
夫何足以配天乎？How can such a man be fit to be the correlate of Heaven?
虽然， Nevertheless,
有族有祖， as there are the smaller branches of a family and the common ancestor of all its branches,
可以为众父， he might be the father of a branch,
而不可以为众父父。 but not the father of the fathers of all the branches.
治乱之率也， Such government (as he would conduct) would lead to disorder.
北面之祸也， It would be calamity in one in the position of a minister,
南面之贼也。” and ruin if he were in the position of the sovereign.'
