孔門弟子七十之徒，The seventy disciples of the school of Confucius
皆任卿相之用， were each of them able to creditably fill the post of a minister of state.
被服聖教， Conforming to the holy doctrines,
文才雕琢， they became accomplished scholars,
知能十倍， and their knowledge and skill grew tenfold.
教訓之功而漸漬之力也。This was the result of teaching; thus latent faculties were gradually developed.
未入孔子之門時， Before they joined Confucius' school,
閭巷常庸無奇。 they sauntered about in the streets as quite ordinary and in no wise exceptional people.
其尤甚不率者，The most ungovernable of all
唯子路也。 was Zilu,
世稱子路無恆之庸人， who is generally reported to have been a common and unsteady individual.
未入孔門時， Before he became Confucius' pupil,
戴雞佩豚， he wore a feather hat and a pig skin belt.
勇猛無禮； He was brutal and unmannerly.
聞誦讀之聲， Whenever he heard some reading,
搖雞奮豚，he tossed up his feather hat, pulled his belt,
揚脣吻之音， and uttered such a yell,
聒賢聖之耳， that he deafened the ears of the worthies and sages.
惡至甚矣。 Such was his wickedness.
孔子引而教之， Confucius took him under his guidance.
漸漬磨礪， By degrees he polished and instructed him.
闔導牖進， The more he advanced in knowledge,
猛氣消損， the more he lost his fierceness,
驕節屈折， and his arrogance was broken.
卒能政事， At last he was able to govern a state,
序在四科。 and ranked in the four classes.
斯蓋變性使惡為善之明效也。This is a shining example of how a man's character was changed from bad into good.
