载太山之上者，七十有二君，It is on record that the seventy-two sovereigns who ascended Mount Tai,
皆劳情苦思， had troubled and toiled,
忧念王事， worrying themselves over the state of the empire.
然后功成事立，Subsequently their efforts were crowned with success, and things settled,
致治太平。 so that universal peace reigned throughout the land.
太平则天下和安，When there was universal peace, the whole empire enjoyed harmony and tranquillity.
乃升太山而封禅焉。Then they ascended the Tai Shan, and performed the hill-sacrifices.
夫修道求仙，Now, the pursuit of Dao and the struggle for immortality
与忧职勤事不同。 are different from the vexations of official life and business.
心思道， He whose thoughts all centre in Dao,
则忘事； forgets worldly affairs,
忧事，because to trouble about them
则害性。would injure his nature.
世称尧若腊，They say that Yao looked dried up
舜若腒， and Shun withered.
心愁忧苦， Their hearts were sorrowful,
形体羸臞。 and their bodies feeble and care-worn.
使黄帝致太平乎？ If Huangdi brought about universal peace,
则其形体宜如尧、舜。 his appearance must have been similar to that of Yao and Shun.
尧、舜不得道， Since Yao and Shun did not attain to Dao,
黄帝升天，非其实也。 it cannot be true that Huangdi rose to Heaven.
使黄帝废事修道？ If Huangdi in his pursuit of Dao neglected all worldly affairs,
则心意调和， his mind would have been equanimous,
形体肥劲， and his body fat and strong.
是与尧、舜异也。 Then he would have been quite different from Yao and Shun,
异则功不同矣。 and consequently his achievements could not have been the same.
功不同，In that case
天下未太平而升封，又非实也。the universe would not have enjoyed universal peace. Without the universal peace his sacrifice on the mountain would not have taken place.
