百药愈病，The different physics cure all sorts of diseases.
病愈而气复，When they have been cured, the vital force is restored,
气复而身轻矣。 and then the body becomes supple again.
凡人禀性，According to man's original nature
身本自轻， his body is supple of itself,
气本自长， and his vital force lasts long of its own accord.
中于风湿，But by exposure to wind and wetness
百病伤之， he falls a victim to hundreds of diseases,
故身重气劣也。whence his body becomes heavy and stiff, and his force is weakened.
服食良药，By taking an efficacious remedy
身气复故， he restores his body and the vital force.
非本气少身重，This force is not small at the outset, or the body heavy,
得药而乃气长身更轻也；and it is not by medicine that the force lasts long, or the body grows supple and light.
禀受之时， When first received,
本自有之矣。 they already possess those qualities spontaneously.
故夫服食药物除百病，Therefore, when by medicines the various diseases are dispelled,
令身轻气长，the body made supple, and the vital force prolonged,
复其本性， they merely return to their original state,
安能延年至于度世？but it is impossible to add to the number of years, let alone the transition into another existence.
