充为人清重， Wang Chong had a pure and sterling character.
游必择友， He made friends wherever he went,
不好苟交。 but did not contract these friendships carelessly.
所友位虽微卑， The position of his friends might be ever so low,
年虽幼稚， and in years they might be ever so young,
行苟离俗， provided only that they rose above common-place mediocrity,
必与之友。 he would seek their friendship.
好杰友雅徒，He had a great admiration for superior men, and liked to associate with distinguished people,
不泛结俗材。 but would not lightly become intimate with men of common gifts.
俗材因其微过，蜚条陷之， In case these latter slandered him for a slight fault or any insignificant mistake,
然终不自明， he would not clear himself of these accusations,
亦不非怨其人。 nor did he bear any grudge against them.
或曰：Some one might ask,
“有良材奇文，无罪见陷，胡不自陈？ why a man of remarkable gifts and extraordinary literary talent should not defend himself against false incriminations.
羊胜之徒，Yang Sheng and others
摩口膏舌； were foul-mouthed and glibtongued;
邹阳自明，but Zou Yang vindicated himself
入狱复出。 and came out of jail again.
苟有全完之行， When a man's conduct is perfect,
不宜为人所缺； people should not attempt to find flaws in it,
既耐勉自伸， and when somebody exerts himself to come to the front,
不宜为人所屈。” they should not keep him down.
荅曰：I reply
不清不见尘， that none but the pure remark dust,
不高不见危， and none but the exalted perceive dangers.
不广不见削，Only those living in abundance, feel restraints,
不盈不见亏。 and those in opulence know what is want.
士兹多口， The scholars at present talk too much of themselves,
为人所陷， therefore they are slandered by others,
盖亦其宜。 which is their due.
好进故自明，Desirous to get on, they show themselves,
憎退故自陈。and resenting neglect, they assert themselves.
吾无好憎， Being free of these desires and resentments,
故默无言。 I keep quiet.
羊胜为谗，The slanders of Yang Sheng
或使之也； were probably prompted by somebody,
邹阳得免， and when Zou Yang was delivered,
或拔之也。 some one saved him.
孔子称命，Confucius spoke of destiny
孟子言天， and Mencius of heaven.
吉凶安危，Luck and mishap, quietude and danger
不在于人。 do not depend on man.
昔人见之， The ancients knew this,
故归之于命，therefore they ascribed these things to destiny
委之于时， and attributed them to time.
浩然恬忽，Placid, tranquil, and equanimous,
无所怨尤。 they did not complain of injustice.
福至不谓己所得，When happiness came, they did not imagine that they themselves had brought it about,
祸到不谓己所为。and when misfortune befell them, they did not consider it their own doing.
故时进意不为丰，When they were successful, their joy was not immoderate,
时退志不为亏。and when they suffered reverses, their courage did not fail them.
不嫌亏以求盈，They did not hate need, and therefore crave for plenty,
不违险以趋平； nor did they brave dangers to win peace.
不鬻智以干禄， Their wisdom they did not sell for wages,
不辞爵以吊名； and they did not decline honours to become famous.
不贪进以自明，Not being bent on success, they did not try to show off,
不恶退以怨人。and not resenting reverses, they did not complain of others.
同安危而齐死生，Tranquillity and excitement were the same to them, life and death equal,
钧吉凶而一败成，luck and mishap identical, and victory and defeat one.
遭十羊胜， Meeting even ten Yang Shengs,
谓之无伤。 they would have said that it mattered not;
动归于天， they left everything to heaven,
故不自明。 and therefore did not wish to shine.
