惠子相梁，Huizi being a minister of state in Liang,
庄子往见之。 Zhuangzi went to see him.
或谓惠子曰：“庄子来，欲代子相。” Some one had told Huizi that Zhuangzi was come with a wish to supersede him in his office,
于是惠子恐， on which he was afraid,
搜于国中三日三夜。 and instituted a search for the stranger all over the kingdom for three days and three nights.
庄子往见之， (After this) Zhuangzi went and saw him,
曰： and said,
“南方有鸟， 'There is in the south a bird,
其名为鵷鶵， called "the Young Phoenix"
子知之乎？- do you know it?
夫鵷鶵发于南海而飞于北海，Starting from the South Sea, it flies to the Northern;
非梧桐不止， never resting but on the bignonia,
非练实不食， never eating but the fruit of the melia azederach,
非醴泉不饮。 and never drinking but from the purest springs.
于是鸱得腐鼠，An owl, which had got a putrid rat,
鵷鶵过之，(once), when a phoenix went passing overhead,
仰而视之曰：‘吓！’ looked up to it and gave an angry scream.
今子欲以子之梁国而吓我邪？Do you wish now, in your possession of the kingdom of Liang, to frighten me with a similar scream?
