孔子观于吕梁，Confucius was looking at the cataract near the gorge of Lu,
县水三十仞， which fell a height of 240 cubits,
流沫四十里， and the spray of which floated a distance of forty li,
鼋鼍鱼龞之所不能游也。(producing a turbulence) in which no tortoise, gavial, fish, or turtle could play.
见一丈夫游之，He saw, however, an old man swimming about in it,
以为有苦而欲死也，as if he had sustained some great calamity, and wished to end his life.
使弟子并流而拯之。 Confucius made his disciples hasten along the stream to rescue the man;
数百步而出， and by the time they had gone several hundred paces,
被发行歌而游于塘下。he was walking along singing, with his hair dishevelled, and enjoying himself at the foot of the embankment.
孔子从而问焉， Confucius followed and asked him,
曰： saying,
“吾以子为鬼， 'I thought you were a sprite;
察子则人也。but, when I look closely at you, I see that you are a man.
请问蹈水有道乎？”Let me ask if you have any particular way of treading the water.'
曰： The man said,
“亡， 'No,
吾无道。 I have no particular way.
吾始乎故， I began (to learn the art) at the very earliest time;
长乎性，as I grew up, it became my nature to practise it;
成乎命。 and my success in it is now as sure as fate.
与齐俱入， I enter and go down with the water in the very centre of its whirl,
与汩偕出， and come up again with it when it whirls the other way.
从水之道而不为私焉。I follow the way of the water, and do nothing contrary to it of myself
此吾所以蹈之也。” - this is how I tread it.'
孔子曰： Confucius said,
“何谓始乎故， 'What do you mean by saying that you began to learn the art at the very earliest time;
长乎性，that as you grew up, it became your nature to practise it,
成乎命？” and that your success in it now is as sure as fate?'
曰： The man replied,
“吾生于陵而安于陵， 'I was born among these hills and lived contented among them
故也；- that was why I say that I have trod this water from my earliest time.
长于水而安于水，I grew up by it, and have been happy treading it
性也； - that is why I said that to tread it had become natural to me.
不知吾所以然而然，I know not how I do it, and yet I do it
命也。” - that is why I say that my success is as sure as fate.'
