阳子之宋，Yang-zi, having gone to Song,
宿于逆旅。 passed the night in a lodging-house,
逆旅有妾二人， the master of which had two concubines
其一人美，- one beautiful,
其一人恶， the other ugly.
恶者贵而美者贱。The ugly one was honoured, however, and the beautiful one contemned.
阳子问其故， Yang-zi asked the reason,
逆旅小子对曰： and a little boy of the house replied,
“其美者自美， 'The beauty knows her beauty,
吾不知其美也； and we do not recognise it.
其恶者自恶， The ugly one knows her ugliness,
吾不知其恶也。” and we do not recognise it.'
阳子曰： Yang-zi said,
“弟子记之！'Remember it, my disciples.
行贤而去自贤之行，Act virtuously, and put away the practice of priding yourselves on your virtue.
安往而不爱哉？”If you do this, where can you go to that you will not be loved?'
