管仲有病，Guan Zhong being ill,
桓公问之曰：duke Huan went to ask for him, and said,
“仲父之病病矣，'Your illness, father Zhong, is very severe;
可不谓云， should you not speak out your mind to me?
至于大病， Should this prove the great illness,
则寡人恶乎属国而可？” to whom will it be best for me to entrust my State?'
管仲曰： Guan Zhong said,
“公谁欲与？” 'To whom does your grace wish to entrust it?'
公曰：“鲍叔牙。”'To Bao Shu-ya,' was the reply.
曰：“不可。He will not do.
其为人，洁廉善士也，He is an admirable officer, pure and incorruptible,
其于不己若者不比之； but with others who are not like himself he will not associate.
又一闻人之过， And when he once hears of another man's faults,
终身不忘。 he never forgets them.
使之治国， If you employ him to administer the state,
上且钩乎君，above, he will take the leading of your Grace,
下且逆乎民。and, below, he will come into collision with the people
其得罪于君也，将弗久矣。” - in no long time you will be holding him as an offender.'
公曰： The duke said,
“然则孰可？”'Who, then, is the man?'
对曰： The reply was,
“勿已， 'If I must speak,
则隰朋可。there is Xi Peng - he will do.
其为人也，上忘而下畔，He is a man who forgets his own high position, and against whom those below him will not revolt.
愧不若黄帝而哀不己若者。He is ashamed that he is not equal to Huang-Di, and pities those who are not equal to himself.
以德分人谓之圣， Him who imparts of his virtue to others we call a sage;
以财分人谓之贤。 him who imparts of his wealth to others we call a man of worth.
以贤临人， He who by his worth would preside over others,
未有得人者也； never succeeds in winning them;
以贤下人， he who with his worth condescends to others,
未有不得人者也。 never but succeeds in winning them.
其于国有不闻也， Xi Peng has not been (much) heard of in the state;
其于家有不见也。 he has not been (much) distinguished in his own clan.
勿已， But as I must speak,
则隰朋可。” he is the man for you.'
