仲尼问于大史大弢、伯常骞、狶韦曰：Zhongni asked the Grand Historiographer Da Tao, (along with) Bo Chang-qian and Xi-wei, saying,
“夫卫灵公饮酒湛乐，'Duke Ling of Wei was so addicted to drink, and abandoned to sensuality,
不听国家之政； that he did not attend to the government of his state.
田猎毕弋， Occupied in his pursuit of hunting with his nets and bows,
不应诸侯之际。 he kept aloof from the meetings of the princes.
其所以为灵公者何邪？In what was it that he showed his title to the epithet of Ling?
大弢曰：Da Tao said,
“是因是也。” 'It was on account of those very things.'
伯常骞曰： Bo Chang-qian said,
“夫灵公有妻三人，'Duke Ling had three mistresses
同滥而浴。 with whom he used to bathe in the same tub.
史鰌奉御而进所，(Once, however), when Shi-qiu came to him with presents from the imperial court,
搏币而扶翼。 he made his servants support the messenger in bearing the gifts.
其慢若彼之甚也， So dissolute was he in the former case,
见贤人若此其肃也，and when he saw a man of worth, thus reverent was he to him.
是其所以为灵公也。” It was on this account that he was styled "Duke Ling."'
狶韦曰： Xi-wei said,
“夫灵公也死， 'When duke Ling died,
卜葬于故墓不吉，and they divined about burying him in the old tomb of his House, the answer was unfavourable;
卜葬于沙丘而吉。when they divined about burying him on Sha-qiu, the answer was favourable.
掘之数仞， Accordingly they dug there to the depth of several fathoms,
得石椁焉， and found a stone coffin.
洗而视之， Having washed and inspected it,
有铭焉， they discovered an inscription,
曰： which said,
‘不冯其子，"This grave will not be available for your posterity;
灵公夺而里之。’Duke Ling will appropriate it for himself"
夫灵公之为灵也久矣，Thus that epithet of Ling had long been settled for the duke.
之二人何足以识之？” But how should those two be able to know this?'
