南伯子綦游乎商之丘，Nan-bo Zi-Qi in rambling about the Heights of Shang,
见大木焉有异， saw a large and extraordinary tree.
结驷千乘，The teams of a thousand chariots
隐将芘其所藾。might be sheltered under it, and its shade would cover them all!
子綦曰：“此何木也哉？Zi-Qi said, 'What a tree is this!
此必有异材夫！”It must contain an extraordinary amount of timber!
仰而视其细枝，When he looked up, however, at its smaller branches,
则拳曲而不可以为栋梁； they were so twisted and crooked that they could not be made into rafters and beams;
俯而见其大根， when he looked down to its root,
则轴解而不可为棺椁； its stem was divided into so many rounded portions that neither coffin nor shell could be made from them.
咶其叶， He licked one of its leaves,
则口烂而为伤； and his mouth felt torn and wounded.
嗅之，则使人狂酲三日而不已。The smell of it would make a man frantic, as if intoxicated, for more than three whole days together.
子綦曰：“此果不材之木也，'This, indeed,' said he, 'is a tree good for nothing,
以至于此其大也。 and it is thus that it has attained to such a size.
嗟乎！Ah!
神人以此不材！and spirit-like men acknowledge this worthlessness (and its result).
宋有荆氏者，宜楸、柏、桑。In Song there is the district of Jing-shi, in which catalpae, cypresses, and mulberry trees grow well.
其拱把而上者，Those of them which are a span or two or rather more in circumference
求狙猴之杙者斩之； are cut down by persons who want to make posts to which to tie their monkeys;
三围四围，those which are three or four spans round
求高名之丽者斩之； are cut down by persons who want beams forr their lofty and famous houses;
七围八围，and those of seven or eight spans
贵人富商之家求樿傍者斩之。 are cut down by noblemen and rich merchants who want single planks for the sides of their coffins.
故未终其天年， The trees in consequence do not complete their natural term of life,
而中道已夭于斧斤， and come to a premature end in the middle of their growth under the axe and bill;
此材之患也。-- this is the evil that befalls them from their supplying good timber.
故解之以牛之白颡者，In the same way the Jie (book) specifies oxen that have white foreheads,
与豚之亢鼻者， pigs that have turned-up snouts,
与人有痔病者， and men that are suffering from piles,
不可以适河。 and forbids their being sacrificed to the Ho.
此皆巫祝以知之矣，The wizards know them by these peculiarities
所以为不祥也， and consider them to be inauspicious,
此乃神人之所以为大祥也。 but spirit-like men consider them on this account to be very fortunate.
