夫有干、越之剑者，Now he who possesses a sword made at Gan-Yue
柙而藏之， preserves it carefully in a box,
不敢用也， and does not dare to use it
宝之至也。- it is considered the perfection of valuable swords.
精神四达并流， But the human spirit goes forth in all directions,
无所不极， flowing on without limit,
上际于天， reaching to heaven above,
下蟠于地， and wreathing round the earth beneath.
化育万物， It transforms and nourishes all things,
不可为象， and cannot be represented by any form.
其名为同帝。 Its name is "the Divinity (in man)."
纯素之道，惟神是守， It is only the path of pure simplicity which guards and preserves the Spirit.
守而勿失， When this path is preserved and not lost,
与神为一， it becomes one with the Spirit;
一之精通， and in this ethereal amalgamation,
合于天伦。 it acts in harmony with the orderly operation of Heaven.'
野语有之曰： There is the vulgar saying,
“众人重利， 'The multitude of men consider gain to be the most important thing;
廉士重名，pure scholars, fame;
贤人尚志， those who are wise and able value their ambition;
圣人贵精。” the sage prizes essential purity.'
故素也者，谓其无所与杂也； Therefore simplicity is the denomination of that in which there is no admixture;
纯也者，谓其不亏其神也。 purity of that in which the spirit is not impaired.
能体纯素，谓之真人。It is he who can embody simplicity and purity whom we call the True Man.
