河伯曰：The earl of the He said,
“然则吾大天地而小毫末可乎？”'Well then, may I consider heaven and earth as (the ideal of) what is great, and the point of a hair as that of what is small?'
北海若曰：“否。Ruo of the Northern Sea replied, 'No.
夫物，量无穷， The (different) capacities of things are illimitable;
时无止，time never stops, (but is always moving on);
分无常， man's lot is ever changing;
终始无故。 the end and the beginning of things never occur (twice) in the same way.
是故大知观于远近，Therefore men of great wisdom, looking at things far off or near at hand,
故小而不寡， do not think them insignificant for being small,
大而不多， nor much of them for being great:
知量无穷； knowing how capacities differ illimitably.
证向今故， They appeal with intelligence to things of ancient and recent occurrence,
故遥而不闷， without being troubled by the remoteness of the former,
掇而不跂， or standing on tiptoe to lay hold of the latter:
知时无止； knowing that time never stops in its course.
察乎盈虚， They examine with discrimination (cases of) fulness and of want,
故得而不喜， not overjoyed by success,
失而不忧， nor disheartened by failure:
知分之无常也； knowing the inconstancy of man's lot.
明乎坦涂， They know the plain and quiet path (in which things proceed),
故生而不说， therefore they are not overjoyed to live,
死而不祸， nor count it a calamity to die:
知终始之不可故也。 the end and the beginning of things never occurring (twice) in the same way.
计人之所知，We must reckon that what men know
不若其所不知； is not so much as what they do not know,
其生之时，and that the time since they were born
不若未生之时。 is not so long as that which elapsed before they were born.
以其至小，When they take that which is most small
求穷其至大之域， and try to fill with it the dimensions of what is most great,
是故迷乱而不能自得也。this leads to error and confusion, and they cannot attain their end.
由此观之， Looking at the subject in this way,
又何以知毫末之足以定至细之倪！ how can you know that the point of a hair is sufficient to determine the minuteness of what is most small,
又何以知天地之足以穷至大之域！” or that heaven and earth are sufficient to complete the dimensions of what is most large?'
