道家 -> 庄子 -> 外篇 -> 秋水 -> 7

河伯曰：The earl of the He said,
“然则何贵于道邪？” 'What then is there so valuable in the Dao?'
北海若曰： Ruo of the Northern Sea replied,
“知道者必达于理， 'He who knows the Dao is sure to be well acquainted with the principles (that appear in the procedures of things).
达于理者必明于权，Acquainted with (those) principles, he is sure to understand how to regulate his conduct in all varying circumstances.
明于权者不以物害己。Having that understanding, he will not allow things to injure himself.
至德者，火弗能热， Fire cannot burn him who is (so) perfect in virtue,
水弗能溺， nor water drown him;
寒暑弗能害， neither cold nor heat can affect him injuriously;
禽兽弗能贼。 neither bird nor beast can hurt him.
非谓其薄之也， This does not mean that he is indifferent to these things;
言察乎安危， it means that he discriminates between where he may safely rest and where he will be in peril;
宁于祸福， that he is tranquil equally in calamity and happiness;
谨于去就， that he is careful what he avoids and what he approaches
莫之能害也。- so that nothing can injure him.
故曰： Hence it is said,
天在内， "What is heavenly is internal;
人在外， what is human is external."
德在乎天。 The virtue (of man) is in what is Heavenly.
知天人之行， If you know the operation of what is Heavenly and what is Human,
本乎天，you will have your root in what is Heavenly
位乎得。 and your position in Virtue.
蹢䠱而屈伸， You will bend or stretch (only) after the (necessary) hesitation;
反要而语极。”you will have returned to the essential, and may be pronounced to have reached perfection.'
曰：“何谓天？何谓人？”'What do you mean,' pursued the earl, 'by the Heavenly, and by the Human?'
北海若曰： Ruo replied,
“牛马四足， 'Oxen and horses have four feet
是谓天；- that is what I call their Heavenly (constitution).
落马首， When horses' heads are haltered,
穿牛鼻， and the noses of oxen are pierced,
是谓人。 that is what I call (the doing of) Man.
故曰： Hence it is said,
无以人灭天， "Do not by the Human (doing) extinguish the Heavenly (constitution);
无以故灭命， do not for your (Human) purpose extinguish the appointment (of Heaven);
无以得殉名。 do not bury your (proper) fame in (such) a pursuit of it;
谨守而勿失， carefully guard (the Way) and do not lose it:
是谓反其真。” this is what I call reverting to your True (Nature)."'
