道家 -> 莊子 -> 外篇 -> 山木 -> 1.2

明日，Next day,
弟子問於莊子曰：his disciples asked Zhuangzi, saying,
「昨日山中之木，'Yesterday the tree on the mountain (you said)
以不材得終其天年； would live out its years because of the uselessness of its wood,
今主人之鴈，and now our host's goose
以不材死。 has died because of its want of power (to cackle)
先生將何處？」- which of these conditions, Master, would you prefer to be in?'
莊子笑曰： Zhuangzi laughed and said,
「周將處夫材與不材之間。 '(If I said that) I would prefer to be in a position between being fit to be useful and wanting that fitness,
材與不材之間，似之而非也，that would seem to be the right position, but it would not be so,
故未免乎累。 for it would not put me beyond being involved in trouble;
若夫乘道德而浮游則不然。whereas one who takes his seat on the Dao and its Attributes, and there finds his ease and enjoyment, is not exposed to such a contingency.
無譽無訾， He is above the reach both of praise and of detraction;
一龍一蛇，now he (mounts aloft) like a dragon, now he (keeps beneath) like a snake;
與時俱化， he is transformed with the (changing) character of the time,
而無肯專為； and is not willing to addict himself to any one thing;
一上一下， now in a high position and now in a low,
以和為量， he is in harmony with all his surroundings;
浮游乎萬物之祖； he enjoys himself at ease with the Author of all things;
物物而不物於物，he treats things as things, and is not a thing to them:
則胡可得而累邪！ where is his liability to be involved in trouble?
此黃帝、神農之法則也。This was the method of Shen Nong and Huang-Di.
若夫萬物之情， As to those who occupy themselves with the qualities of things,
人倫之傳， and with the teaching and practice of the human relations,
則不然。 it is not so with them.
合則離， Union brings on separation;
成則毀，success, overthrow;
廉則挫，sharp corners, the use of the file;
尊則議，honour, critical remarks;
有為則虧，active exertion, failure;
賢則謀，wisdom, scheming;
不肖則欺，inferiority, being despised:
胡可得而必乎哉？ where is the possibility of unchangeableness in any of these conditions?
悲夫！Remember this, my disciples.
弟子志之，其唯道德之鄉乎！Let your abode be here - in the Dao and its Attributes.
