弟子曰：His disciples said,
「不然。 'Not so.
夫尋常之溝，In ditches eight cubits wide, or even twice as much,
巨魚無所還其體， big fishes cannot turn their bodies about,
而鯢鰌為之制； but minnows and eels find them sufficient for them;
步仞之丘陵， on hillocks six or seven cubits high,
巨獸無所隱其軀， large beasts cannot conceal themselves,
而㜸狐為之祥。 but foxes of evil omen find it a good place for them.
且夫尊賢授能，And moreover, honour should be paid to the wise, offices given to the able,
先善與利， and preference shown to the good and the beneficial.
自古堯、舜以然， From of old Yao and Shun acted thus
而況畏壘之民乎？- how much more may the people of Wei-lei do so!
夫子亦聽矣！」0 Master, let them have their way!'
