南榮趎贏糧，Nan-rong Chu hereupon took with him some rations,
七日七夜至老子之所。 and after seven days and seven nights arrived at the abode of Laozi,
老子曰： who said to him,
「子自楚之所來乎？」 'Are you come from Chu's?'
南榮趎曰：「唯。」'I am,' was the reply.
老子曰：「子何與人偕來之眾也？」And why, Sir, have you come with such a multitude of attendants?
南榮趎懼然顧其後。Nan-rong was frightened, and turned his head round to look behind him.
老子曰： Laozi said,
「子不知吾所謂乎？」 'Do you not understand my meaning?'
南榮趎俯而慚， The other held his head down and was ashamed,
仰而歎曰：and then he lifted it up, and sighed, saying,
「今者吾忘吾答， 'I forgot at the moment what I should reply to your question,
因失吾問。」 and in consequence I have lost what I wished to ask you.'
老子曰： Laozi asked,
「何謂也？」 'What do you mean?'
南榮趎曰； The other replied,
「不知乎？ 'If I have not wisdom,
人謂我朱愚。 men say that I am stupid,
知乎？ while if I have it,
反愁我軀。 it occasions distress to myself.
不仁則害人，If I have not benevolence, then (I am charged) with doing hurt to others,
仁則反愁我身；while if I have it, I distress myself.
不義則傷彼，If I have not righteousness, I (am charged with) injuring others,
義則反愁我已。while if I have it, I distress myself.
我安逃此而可？ How can I escape from these dilemmas?
此三言者，趎之所患也， These are the three perplexities that trouble me;
願因楚而問之。」 and I wish at the suggestion of Chu to ask you about them.'
老子曰： Laozi replied,
「向吾見若眉睫之間，'A little time ago, when I saw you and looked right into your eyes,
吾因以得汝矣， I understood you,
今汝又言而信之。 and now your words confirm the judgment which I formed.
若規規然若喪父母，You look frightened and amazed. You have lost your parents,
揭竿而求諸海也。 and are trying with a pole to find them at the (bottom of) the sea.
女亡人哉！ You have gone astray;
惘惘乎汝欲反汝情性而無由入，you are at your wit's end. You wish to recover your proper nature, and you know not what step to take first to find it.
可憐哉！」 You are to be pitied!'
