徐无鬼出，When Xu Wu-gui came out,
女商曰： Nu Shang said to him,
“先生独何以说吾君乎？'How was it, Sir, that you by your counsels produced such an effect on our ruler?
吾所以说吾君者， In my counsellings of him,
横说之则以《诗》、《书》、《礼》、《乐》，now indirectly, taking my subjects from the Books of Poetry, History, Rites, and Music;
从说之则以金板、六弢，now directly, from the Metal Tablets, and the six Bow-cases,
奉事而大有功者不可为数，all calculated for the service (of the state), and to be of great benefit - in these counsellings, repeated times without number,
而吾君未尝启齿。 I have never seen the ruler show his teeth in a smile:
今先生何以说吾君，使吾君说若此乎？” by what counsels have you made him so pleased to-day?'
徐无鬼曰： Xu Wu-gui replied,
“吾直告之吾相狗马耳。” 'I only told him how I judged of dogs and horses by looking at their appearance.'
女商曰：“若是乎”？'So?' said Nu Shang,
曰： and the other rejoined,
“子不闻夫越之流人乎？ 'Have you not heard of the wanderer from Yue?
去国数日， When he had been gone from the state several days,
见其所知而喜； he was glad when he saw any one whom he had seen in it;
去国旬月， when he had been gone a month,
见其所尝见于国中者喜； he was glad when he saw any one whom he had known in it;
及期年也， and when he had been gone a round year,
见似人者而喜矣。 he was glad when he saw any one who looked like a native of it.
不亦去人滋久， The longer he was gone,
思人滋深乎！the more longingly did he think of the people - was it not so?
夫逃虚空者， The men who withdraw to empty valleys,
藜、藋柱乎鼪、鼬之迳， where the hellebore bushes stop up the little paths made by the weasels,
踉位其空， as they push their way or stand amid the waste,
闻人足音跫然而喜矣， are glad when they seem to hear the sounds of human footsteps;
而况乎兄弟亲戚之謦咳其侧者乎！and how much more would they be so, if it were their brothers and relatives talking and laughing by their side!
久矣夫！莫以真人之言謦咳吾君之侧乎！” How long it is since the words of a True man were heard as he talked and laughed by our ruler's side!'
