道家 -> 莊子 -> 雜篇 -> 則陽 -> 2.2

生而美者，When (the sage) is born with all his excellence,
人與之鑑， it is other men who see it for him.
不告則不知其美於人也。If they did not tell him, he would not know that he was more excellent than others.
若知之， And when he knows it,
若不知之， he is as if he did not know it;
若聞之， when he hears it,
若不聞之， he is as if he did not hear it.
其可喜也終無已， His source of joy in it has no end,
人之好之亦無已， and men's admiration of him has no end
性也。- all this takes place naturally.
聖人之愛人也，The love of the sage for others
人與之名， receives its name from them.
不告則不知其愛人也。If they did not tell him of it, he would not know that he loved them;
若知之， and when he knows it,
若不知之， he is as if he knew it not;
若聞之， when he hears it,
若不聞之， he is as if he heard it not.
其愛人也終無已， His love of others never has an end,
人之安之亦無已， and their rest in him has also no end:
性也。 all this takes place naturally.
