禹曰：Yu said,
“于， 'Ah!
帝！ your Majesty,
慎乃在位， carefully maintain the Throne which you occupy,
安尔止。 and be quiet in your behaviour,
辅德， assist virtue,
天下大应。 and the nation will grandly respond to your pure desires.
清意以昭待上帝命， It will thus be manifest that you await the decrees of the Supreme Being,
天其重命用休。” and will not Heaven renew its favouring appointment by conferring blessings on you?'
帝曰： The Emperor said,
“吁， 'Dear me!
臣哉， ministers!
臣哉！ ministers!
臣作朕股肱耳目。you constitute my legs and arms, my ears and eyes.
予欲左右有民，女辅之。If I wish to aid and support the people, you help me to do so.
余欲观古人之象。If I wish to see the emblematic figures of the ancients
日月星辰，— the sun, moon, and stars
作文绣服色， — which are embroidered on the robes and coloured silks,
女明之。 you see them clearly for me.
予欲闻六律五声八音，If I wish to hear the six pitchpipes, the five notes, and the eight musical instruments
来始滑， on the adjustment of which depend good government or misrule,
以出入五言， and the consequent rise or decline of the five duties,
女听。 you hear them for me.
予即辟， If I do wrong,
女匡拂予。 you have to correct me.
女无面谀。Do not flatter me to my face
退而谤予。 and speak evil of me behind my back.
敬四辅臣。Be reverent, ye four ministers,
诸众谗嬖臣， and all ye calumniating minions of officials.
君德诚施皆清矣。” If the prince's virtue is honestly displayed all men will be pure.'
禹曰：“然。Yu said, 'Yes!
帝即不时， should your Majesty not act thus,
布同善恶则毋功。”but equally employ the good and bad, you will gain no credit.'
