是故，Hence,
夫象， to speak of the emblematic figures:
聖人有以見天下之賾， - (The sage) was able to survey all the complex phenomena under the sky.
而擬諸其形容， He then considered in his mind how they could be figured,
象其物宜， and (by means of the diagrams) represented their material forms and their character.
是故謂之象。 Hence those (diagrams) are denominated Semblances.
聖人有以見天下之動， A (later) sage was able to survey the motive influences working all under the sky.
而觀其會通， He contemplated them in their common action and special nature,
以行其典禮， in order to bring out the standard and proper tendency of each.
繫辭焉， He then appended his explanation (to each line),
以斷其吉凶， to determine the good or evil indicated by it.
是故謂之爻。 Hence those (lines with their explanations) are denominated Imitations (the Yao).
極天下之賾者，The most thorough mastery of all the complex phenomena under the sky
存乎卦； is obtained from the diagrams.
鼓天下之動者，The greatest stimulus to movement in adaptation to all affairs under the sky
存乎辭； is obtained from the explanations.
化而裁之，The transformations and shaping that take place
存乎變； are obtained from the changes (of the lines);
推而行之，the carrying this out and operating with it
存乎通； is obtained from the general method (that has been established).
神而明之，The seeing their spirit-like intimations and understanding them
存乎其人； depended on their being the proper men;
默而成之，and the completing (the study of) them
不言而信，by silent meditation, and securing the faith of others without the use of words,
存乎德行。 depended on their virtuous conduct.
