故虽有贤君，Even the kind ruler
不爱无功之臣； will not show favours to ministers without merit.
虽有慈父，Even the affectionate father
不爱无益之子。 will not love his useless sons.
是故不胜其任而处其位，He who occupies a position but is not equal to the task
非此位之人也； is not the proper person for the position.
不胜其爵而处其禄，He who draws emoluments but does not deserve the rank
非此禄之主也。 is not the proper proprietor of the emoluments.
良弓难张，Good bows may be hard to draw,
然可以及高入深； but they can reach great heights and pierce deeply.
良马难乘，Good horses may be hard to ride on,
然可以任重致远； but they can carry heavy burdens and make long journeys.
良才难令，Real talents may be hard to command,
然可以致君见尊。 but they can be trusted to be envoys to the court of the emperor and to meet the nobility.
是故江河不恶小谷之满己也，故能大。Therefore the big rivers do not despise the little brooklets for tributaries.
圣人者，And great men
事无辞也，do not neglect any menial task
物无违也，or reject any trifle,
故能为天下器。 and so they become vessels for the world.
是故江河之水，The water in a river
非一源
之水		does not come from a single source,
1也。
千镒之裘，非一狐之白也。neither is the fur coat that is worth a thousand yi composed of the white fur of a single fox.
夫恶有同方取不取同而已者乎？Now, to discard those who agree with the right but employ those who agree with one's self
盖非兼王之道也。 is not the way to be a great ruler.
是故天地不昭昭，(Just as) Heaven and earth do not dazzle,
大水不潦潦，great bodies of water do not boil and foam,
大火不燎燎，and great conflagrations do not coruscate,
王德不尧尧者，乃千人之长也。 (so) the imperial character does not lift itself up beyond reach.
