儒家 -> 禮記 -> 曾子問 -> 21.2

孔子曰：「非禮也。Confucius said, 'It is not the rule.
古者， Anciently,
男子外有傅，outside the palace, a boy had his master,
內有慈母， and at home his foster-mother;
君命所使教子也， they were those whom the ruler employed to teach his son;
何服之有？-what ground should these be for wearing mourning for them?
昔者，魯昭公少喪其母， Formerly duke Zhao of Lu having lost his mother when he was little,
有慈母良，had a foster-mother, who was good;
及其死也， and when she died,
公弗忍也， he could not bear (not) to mourn for her,
欲喪之， and wished to do so.
有司以聞， The proper officer on hearing of it,
曰： said,
『古之禮， "According to the ancient rule,
慈母無服， there is no mourning for a foster-mother.
今也君為之服， If you wear this mourning,
是逆古之禮而亂國法也；you will act contrary to that ancient rule, and introduce confusion into the laws of the state.
若終行之， If you will after all do it,
則有司將書之以遺後世。then we will put it on record, and transmit the act to the future;
無乃不可乎！』 will not that be undesirable?"
公曰： The duke said,
『古者天子練冠以燕居。』"Anciently the son of Heaven, when unoccupied and at ease, wore the soft inner garment, assumed after the year's mourning, and the cap."
公弗忍也， The duke could not bear not to wear mourning,
遂練冠以喪慈母。 and on this he mourned for his foster-mother in this garb.
喪慈母，The mourning for a foster-mother
自魯昭公始也。」 originated with duke Zhao of Lu.'
