太祖旣征孫權還，使遼與樂進、李典等將七千餘人屯合肥。After Taizu had returned from his campaign against Sun Quan, he dispatched Zhang Liao together with Yue Jin, Li Dian, and others to garrison Hefei with more than seven thousand men.
太祖征張魯，教與護軍薛悌，署函邊曰「賊至乃發」。While Taizu was campaigning against Zhang Lu, he instructed the military commander Xue Ti and left a sealed letter with instructions, marked: "Open this only if the enemy arrives."
俄而權率十萬衆圍合肥，乃共發教，教曰：「若孫權至者，張、李將軍出戰；Soon after, Sun Quan led an army of over 100,000 to besiege Hefei. They then jointly opened the letter, which read: "If Sun Quan arrives, Generals Zhang and Li will lead the troops in battle;
樂將軍守，護軍勿得與戰。」General Yue shall defend, and the military commander must not engage in battle."
諸將皆疑。The generals were all doubtful.
遼曰：「公遠征在外，比救至，彼破我必矣。Zhang Liao said: "Our commander is far away on campaign; by the time reinforcements arrive, they will have already crushed us.
是以教指及其未合逆擊之，折其盛勢，以安衆心，然後可守也。That is why the commander's instructions are for us to strike before their forces unite, shatter their momentum, calm our troops' morale, and then we can hold out."
成敗之機，在此一戰，諸君何疑？」"The fate of victory or defeat hinges on this single battle. Why do you still doubt?"
李典亦與遼同。Li Dian also agreed with Zhang Liao.
於是遼夜募敢從之士，得八百人，椎牛饗將士，明日大戰。Thus, Zhang Liao recruited 800 brave volunteers at night, slaughtered oxen to feast the soldiers and officers, and prepared for a major battle the next day.
平旦，遼被甲持戟，先登陷陣，殺數十人，斬二將，大呼自名，衝壘入，至權麾下。At dawn, Zhang Liao donned his armor and gripped a halberd, leading the charge into the enemy formation. He killed dozens of soldiers, beheaded two generals, shouted out his name in loud cries, broke through the defenses, and reached Sun Quan's command post.
權大驚，衆不知所為，走登高冢，以長戟自守。Sun Quan was greatly alarmed; his troops did not know what to do and fled up a high mound, using long halberds for self-defense.
遼叱權下戰，權不敢動，望見遼所將衆少，乃聚圍遼數重。Zhang Liao shouted at Sun Quan to come down and fight, but Sun Quan dared not move. Upon seeing that Zhang Liao's forces were few, he gathered his troops in multiple layers around him.
遼左右麾圍，直前急擊，圍開，遼將麾下數十人得出，餘衆號呼曰：「將軍棄我乎！」Zhang Liao directed his men to break through the encirclement and charged forward urgently, creating an opening. Zhang Liao led dozens of his subordinates out, while the remaining troops cried out: "Is the general abandoning us?"
遼復還突圍，拔出餘衆。Zhang Liao then returned to break through the encirclement again and rescued the rest of his men.
權人馬皆披靡，無敢當者。Sun Quan's troops were thrown into disarray, with no one daring to oppose them.
自旦戰至日中，吳人奪氣，還脩守備，衆心乃安，諸將咸服。The battle raged from dawn until midday; the Wu forces lost their morale and retreated to repair their defenses. The troops' hearts were then calmed, and all the generals were convinced of Zhang Liao's leadership.
權守合肥十餘日，城不可拔，乃引退。Sun Quan besieged Hefei for more than ten days but could not capture the city, and thus withdrew his forces.
遼率諸軍追擊，幾復獲權。Zhang Liao led his troops in pursuit, nearly capturing Sun Quan again.
太祖大壯遼，拜征東將軍。Taizu greatly praised Zhang Liao and appointed him as Zhongdong Jiangjun (General Who Subdues the East).
孫盛曰：夫兵固詭道，奇正相資，若乃命將出征，推轂委權，或賴率然之形，或憑掎角之勢，羣帥不和，則棄師之道也。Sun Sheng said: "War is inherently a matter of deception, with the use of both orthodox and unorthodox strategies. When commanding generals are sent on campaigns, they must be entrusted with authority. Sometimes success depends on forming flexible alliances; at other times it relies on coordinated flanking maneuvers. If commanders do not cooperate harmoniously, this is the way to lose an army."
至於合肥之守，縣弱無援，專任勇者則好戰生患，專任怯者則懼心難保。As for the defense of Hefei, it was a weak and isolated position with no reinforcements. Relying solely on the brave would lead to reckless fighting and danger; relying solely on the timid would result in fear and loss of security.
且彼衆我寡，必懷貪墯；Moreover, with their numbers far greater than ours, they must have been greedy for victory and complacent;
以致命之兵，擊貪墯之卒，其勢必勝；using our determined forces to strike against their overconfident troops, the outcome was bound to be a victory.
勝而後守，守則必固。Victory ensured a strong defense, and with a solid defense, the city would surely hold firm.
是以魏武推選方圓，參以同異，為之密教，節宣其用；Therefore, Wei Wu (Cao Cao) carefully selected and balanced different strategies, considering both similarities and differences, issuing secret instructions to regulate their use;
事至而應，若合符契妙矣！when the situation arose, he responded accordingly—like matching a seal perfectly! What a marvel it was!
