或问：Someone asked:
“秦、楚既为天典命矣， Qin Shi Huang and Xiang Yu both received Tian's mandate to rule,
秦缢灞上， but Qin Shi Huang was strangled on the Ba River,
楚分江西， and Xiangyu was cut into pieces at Hong Xi.
兴废何速乎？” Why were they cast aside so quickly?
曰：“天胙光德而陨明忒。Yangzi said: Tian honors glorious de and overthrows excessive corruption.
昔在有熊、高阳、高辛、唐、虞、三代，In the past the Yellow Emperor, Gao Yang, Gao Xin, Tang, Shun and the Three Dynasties
咸有显懿， all clearly manifested de.
故天胙之， Thus Tian honored them,
为神明主， used them to unite Heaven and Earth,
且著在天庭， and placed them in the Imperial Hall.
是生民之愿也， This is what the people desired,
厥飨国久长。 and long did their kingdoms flourish.
若秦、楚强阋震扑，Xiang Yu and the Qin Shi Huang, on the other hand, ruled by force, feuded quarrelsomely, terrorized, and attacked each other.
胎藉三正， They coldly rejected the three proper daos of Heaven,
播其虐于黎苗， Earth and Man and their reputation for cruelty spread among the masses.
子弟且欲丧之， Even their own children and followers wanted to kill them,
况于民乎？ how much more so their people?
况于鬼神乎？How much more so ghosts and spirits?
废未速也！” They could not have been done away with fast enough!
