今父之親子也，'Here now is the affection of a father for his sons
親賢而下無能；- he loves the worthy among them, and places on a lower level those who do not show ability;
母之親子也， but that of a mother for them is such,
賢則親之， that while she loves the worthy,
無能則憐之。 she pities those who do not show ability
母，- the mother
親而不尊； deals with them on the ground of affection and not of showing them honour;
父， the father,
尊而不親。 on the ground of showing them honour and not of affection.
水之於民也， (So we may say of) water and the people,
親而不尊；that it manifests affection to them, but does not give them honour;
火， of fire,
尊而不親。that it gives them honour, but does not manifest affection;
土之於民也， of the ground,
親而不尊；that it manifests affection, but does not give honour;
天， of Heaven,
尊而不親。that it gives them honour, but does not manifest affection;
命之於民也， of the nature conferred on them,
親而不尊；that it manifests affection, but does not give them honour;
鬼， and of the manes of their departed,
尊而不親。」that they give honour, but do not manifest affection.'
