墨家 -> 墨子 -> 卷一 -> 三辯 -> 2

子墨子曰：「昔者堯舜有茅茨者，且以為禮，且以為樂。Mozi replied: In ancient times, Yao and Shun lived in huts and yet they made codes of propriety and composed music.
湯放桀於大水，Tang sent Jie to exile on the ocean
環天下自立以為王， and installed himself ruler of the empire.
事成功立，Having achieved success
無大後患， and without cause for anxiety,
因先王之樂，又1
自作樂， he added to the music of the former kings that of his own composition,
命曰
《護》，又		 called "The Salvation" and also instituted the "Jiuzhao."
脩2《九招》。
武王勝殷殺紂，King Wu conquered the Yin dynasty and executed Zhou
環天下自立以為王， and installed himself ruler of the empire.
事成功立，Having achieved success
無大後患， and having no cause of anxiety,
因先王之樂，he added to the music of the former kings
又自作樂， that of his own composition,
命曰《象》。 called "Xiang."
周成王因先王3之樂，
又自作樂，4命曰		King Cheng of Zhou again added to the music of the former kings that of his own composition, named "Zouyu."
《騶虞》。
周成王之治天下也，The reign of King Cheng
不若武王。 was not so good as that of King Wu,
武王之治天下也，that of King Wu
不若成湯。 was not so good as that of Tang the Successful,
成湯之治天下也，and that of Tang the Successful
不若堯舜。 was not so good as that of Yao and Shun.
故其樂逾繁者，其治逾寡。So, then, he who has the more elaborate music has the less efficient government.
自此觀之，樂非所以治天下也。Judging from this, music is not anything to govern the empire with.
