且夫物之生長，Now, the growth and development of creatures
無卒成暴起，is not abrupt, and its changes are not violent,
皆有浸漸。 but gradually brought about.
為道學仙之人，If the Daoists and students of immortality
能先生數寸之毛羽， could first grow feathers and plumes several inches long,
從地自奮， so that they could skim over the earth,
升樓臺之陛， and rise to the terraces of high buildings,
乃可謂升天。 one might believe that they can ascend to heaven.
今無小升之兆， But they do not show that they are able to fly even a small distance.
卒有大飛之驗，何方術之學成無浸漸也？ How can they suddenly acquire the faculty of flying such a long way through the study of their miraculous arts without any gradual progress?
毛羽大效，難以觀實。 That such a great result might be really effected by means of feathers and wings cannot be ascertained.
