乡长治1
其乡，而乡既已治矣，Having accomplished this
有率其乡万民，he in turn led the people of his district
以尚同乎国君， to identify themselves with the feudal lord,
曰： saying:
‘凡乡之万民，"All you people of the district
皆上同乎国君， shall identify yourselves with the lord of the state,
而不敢下比。 and shall not unite with the subordinates.
国君之所是，What the lord thinks to be right
必亦是之， all shall think to be right;
国君之所非，what he thinks to be wrong
必亦非之。 all shall think to be wrong.
去而不善言，Put away your evil speech
学国君之善言； and learn his good speech;
去而不善行，put away your evil conduct
学国君之善行。 and learn his good conduct.
国君固国之贤者也， For the lord of the state is naturally the (most) virtuous of the state.
举国人以法国君， If all the people in the state follow the example of their lord,
夫国何说而不治哉？’ how then can the state be in disorder?"
察国君之所以治国，而国治者，何故之以也？Now, why was the feudal lord so successful in governing the state?
曰唯以其能一同其国之义，是以国治。It was just because he could unify the purposes in the state that the state is orderly.
