子墨子言曰：“今天下之所誉善者，其说将何
哉		Mozi said: What does the world now praise to be good?
1？
为其上中天之利，而中中鬼之利，而下中人之利，故誉之与？Is not an act praised because it is useful to Heaven on high, to the spirits in the middle sphere, and to the people below?
意亡非为其上中天之利，而中中鬼之利，而下中人之利，故誉之与？Certainly no other reason is needed for praise than to be useful to Heaven on high, to the spirits in the middle, and to the people below.
虽使下愚之人，必曰：‘将为其上中天之利，而中中鬼之利，而下中人之利，故誉之’。Even the stupid would say it is praiseworthy when it is helpful to Heaven on high, to the spirits in the middle, and to the people below.
今天下之所同义者，圣王之法也。And what the world agrees on is just the way of the sage-kings.
今天下之诸侯将犹多皆免攻伐并兼， Now the feudal lords in the empire still attack and assault each other.
则是有誉义之名，This is to praise the principle
而不察其实也。 without understanding its real meaning.
此譬犹盲者之与人，They resemble the blind man
同命白黑之名，who uses with others the names of black and white
而不能分其物也， but cannot discriminate between such objects.
则岂谓有别哉？ Can this be said to be real discrimination?
是故古之知者之为天下度也，Therefore, deliberating for the empire, the ancient wise men
必顺虑其义， always considered the real (meaning of the) principles,
而后为之行， and acted accordingly.
是以动则不疑， Hence thev were no more uncertain in their actions.
速通成得其所欲，All desires, far or near, were satisfied,
而顺天鬼百姓之利，and Heaven, the spirits, and the people were all blessed.
则知者之道也。 Such was the way of the wise men.
是故古之仁人有天下者，Governing the empire, the ancient magnanimous men
必反大国之说， always worked for mutual satisfaction with the large states,
一天下之和， brought the empire into harmony,
总四海之内， and centralized all that was within the four seas.
焉率天下之百姓，Then they led the people in the empire
以农臣事上帝山川鬼神。diligently to do service to God, hills and rivers, and the spirits and ghosts.
利人多，Many were the benefits to the people
功故又大， and great was their success.
是以天赏之， Thereupon Heaven rewarded them,
鬼富之， the spirits enriched them,
人誉之， and the people praised them.
使贵为天子，The high honour of Son of Heaven was conferred upon them
富有天下， and the great wealth of the whole world was given to them.
名参乎天地，Their names partake of (the permanence and greatness of) Heaven and Earth
至今不废。 and are not forgotten even to this day.
此则知者之道也，先王之所以有天下者也。Such is the way of the wise and such is the way by which the ancient kings came to possess the world.
