今王公大人之为葬埋，则异于此。The way in which the present rulers are buried is quite different from this.
必大棺中棺， There are the outer and the inner coffins,
革闠三操， and then the three layers of hide and embroidered covers.
璧玉即具， When the stones and jade are all collected,
戈剑鼎鼓壶滥，there are yet to be completed the spears, swords, dings, pots and ice receptacles,
文绣素练，大鞅万领， and ten thousand of decorated reins and yokes,
舆马女乐皆具，and the carriages, horses, and the chorus girls.
曰必捶涂差通，Then, there must be built the tunnel to reach under the tomb
垄虽凡山陵。 which is as high as a hill.
此为辍民之事，This interferes with people's work
靡民之财，and wastes people's wealth
不可胜计也， to such a great extent.
其为毋用若此矣。” How indeed is this to be avoided?
是故子墨子曰： So Mozi said:
“乡者，吾本言曰，I have already said
意亦使
法1其言，		that if in adopting the doctrine
用其谋， and practising the principle,
计厚葬久丧，elaborate funeral and extended mourning
请可以富贫众寡，really could enrich the poor, increase the few,
定危治乱乎， remove danger and regulate disorder,
则仁也， they would be magnanimous,
义也， righteous,
孝子之事也， and the duty of the filial son.
为人谋者，Those who give counsel
不可不劝也； could not but encourage them.
意亦使法其言，(On the other hand,) if in adopting the doctrine
用其谋， and practising the principle,
若人厚葬久丧，elaborate funeral and extended mourning
实不可以富贫众寡，really cannot enrich the poor, increase the few,
定危治乱乎， remove danger and regulate disorder,
则非仁也， they are not magnanimous,
非义也， righteous,
非孝子之事也， and the duty of the filial son.
为人谋者，Those who are to give counsel
不可不沮也。 cannot but discourage it.
是故求以富国家，Now, (we have seen) that to seek to enrich a country thereby
甚得贫焉； brings about poverty;
欲以众人民，to seek to increase the people thereby
甚得寡焉； results in a decrease;
欲以治刑政，and to seek to regulate government thereby
甚得乱焉； begets disorder.
求以禁止大国之攻小国也，To seek to prevent the large states from attacking the small ones by this way
而既已不可矣； is impossible on the one hand,
欲以干上帝鬼神之福，and, on the other, to seek to procure blessing from God and the spirits through it
又得祸焉。 only brings calamity.
上稽之尧舜禹汤文武之道而政逆之，When we look up and examine the ways of Yao, Shun, Yu, Tang, Wen, and Wu, we find it is diametrically opposed to (these).
下稽之桀纣幽厉之事，But when we look down and examine the regimes of Jie, Zhou, You, and Li,
犹合节也。 we find it agrees with these like two parts of a tally.
若以此观，则厚葬久丧其非圣王之道也。So, judging from these, elaborate funeral and extended mourning are not the way of the sage-kings.
