然则明辨此之说将柰何哉？Now, how is this doctrine to be examined?
子墨子言曰： Mozi said:
“必立仪， Some standard of judgment must be established.
言而毋仪，To expound a doctrine without regard to the standard
譬犹运钧之上而立朝夕者也， is similar to determining the directions of sunrise and sunset on a revolving potter's wheel.
是非利害之辨，By this means the distinction of right and wrong, benefit and harm,
不可得而明知也。 cannot be known.
故言必有三表。Therefore there must be three tests.
何谓三表？What are the three tests?
子墨子言曰：“有本之者，有原之者，有用之者。Mozi said: Its basis, its verifiability, and its applicability.
于何本之？How is it to be based?
上本之于古者圣王之事。It should be based on the deeds of the ancient sage-kings.
于何原之？How is it to be verified?
下原察百姓耳目之实。 It is to be verified by the senses of hearing and sight of the common people.
于何用之？How is it to be applied?
废以为刑政，观其中国家百姓人民之利。It is to be applied by adopting it in government and observing its benefits to the country and the people.
此所谓言有三表也。This is what is meant by the three tests of every doctrine.
