昔者楚人与越人舟战于江，Formerly the people of Chu and the people of Yue had a battle on the River.
楚人顺流而进，The people of Chu were with the stream in their advance
迎流而退， but against it in their retreat.
见利而进， When success was in sight they advanced.
见不利则其退难。 But when defeat was confronting them they found it very difficult to retreat.
越人迎流而进，On the contrary the people of Yue advanced upstream
顺流而退， but retreated downstream.
见利而进， When success was in sight they would advance.
见不利则其退速， And when defeat was confronting them they could easily retreat.
越人因此若埶，With this advantage the people of Yue
亟败楚人。 greatly defeated the people of Chu.
公输子自鲁南游楚， Gong Shuzi came south from Lu to Chu,
焉始为舟战之器，and began making implements for naval warfare
作为钩强之备， which consisted of grappling hooks and rams.
退者钩之， When the enemy were retreating they used the hooks.
进者强之， And when the enemy were advancing they employed the rams.
量其钩强之长，而制为之兵， And the weapons were made according to the length of these hooks and rams.
楚之兵节， The weapons of Chu thus were all standardized,
越之兵不节， and those of Yue were not.
楚人因此若埶，And, with this advantage, the people of Chu
亟败越人。 greatly defeated the people of Yue.
公输子善其巧，Gong Shuzi was proud of his cleverness
以语子墨子曰： and asked Mozi:
“我舟战有钩强， "There are the implements for grappling and ramming in my boats of war.
不知子之义亦有钩强乎？” Do you have such a device in your righteousness?"
子墨子曰： Mozi said:
“我义之钩强，The grappling and ramming device in my righteousness
贤于子舟战之钩强。 is more excellent than your implements in the boats of war.
我钩强， In my scheme,
我钩之以爱，I pull with love
揣之以恭。 and push with respect.
弗钩以爱，If you do not pull with love
则不亲； there can be no intimacy.
弗揣以恭，If you do not push with respect
则速狎； there will be rapid desecration.
狎而不亲则速离。 And desecration without real intimacy will soon end in separation.
故交相爱，Therefore mutual love
交相恭，and mutual respect
犹若相利也。 mean really mutual benefit.
今子钩而止人， Now you pull people up to stop their retreat,
人亦钩而止子， but they would also pull you up and stop your retreat.
子强而距人， You push people back to stop their advance,
人亦强而距子， but they would also push you back to stop your advance.
交相钩，The mutual pulling
交相强，and pushing
犹若相害也。 are just mutual injury.
故我义之钩强，Therefore the device of pulling and pushing in my righteousness
贤子舟战之钩强。” is more excellent than the implements of pulling and pushing in your boats of war.
