太上贵德，In the highest antiquity they prized (simply conferring) good;
其次务施报。in the time next to this, giving and repaying was the thing attended to.
礼尚往来。And what the rules of propriety value is that reciprocity.
往而不来， If I give a gift and nothing comes in return,
非礼也； that is contrary to propriety;
来而不往，if the thing comes to me, and I give nothing in return,
亦非礼也。 that also is contrary to propriety.
人有礼则安，If a man observe the rules of propriety, he is in a condition of security;
无礼则危。if he do not, he is in one of danger.
故曰： Hence there is the saying,
礼者不可不学也。 'The rules of propriety should by no means be left unlearned.'
