君子将营宫室：When a superior man, (high in rank), is about to engage in building,
宗庙为先， the ancestral temple should have his first attention,
厩库为次， the stables and arsenal the next,
居室为后。 and the residences the last.
凡家造： In all preparations of things by (the head of) a clan,
祭器为先， the vessels of sacrifice should have the first place;
牺赋为次，the victims supplied from his revenue, the next;
养器为后。and the vessels for use at meals, the last.
无田禄者不设祭器； Those who have no revenue from lands do not provide vessels for sacrifice.
有田禄者，Those who have such revenue
先为祭服。 first prepare their sacrificial dresses.
君子虽贫，A superior man,. though poor,
不粥祭器； will not sell his vessels of sacrifice;
虽寒， though suffering from cold,
不衣祭服； he will not wear his sacrificial robes;
为宫室， in building a house,
不斩于丘木。 he will not cut down the trees on his grave-mounds.
