曾子寝疾，病。Zeng-zi was lying in his chamber very ill.
乐正子春坐于床下， Yue-zheng Zi-chun was sitting by the side of the couch;
曾元、曾申坐于足， Zeng Yuan and Zeng Shen were sitting at (their father's) feet;
童子隅坐而执烛。 and there was a lad sitting in a corner holding a torch,
童子曰： who said,
“华而睆， 'How beautifully coloured and bright!
大夫之箦与？” Is it not the mat of a Great officer?'
子春曰：“止！” Zi-chun (tried to) stop him,
曾子闻之， but Zeng-zi had heard him,
瞿然曰：“呼！” and in a tone of alarm called him,
曰：“华而睆，大夫之箦与？” when he repeated what he had said.
曾子曰：“然，'Yes,' said Zeng-zi,
斯季孙之赐也， 'it was the gift of Ji-sun,
我未之能易也。 and I have not been able to change it.
元，起易箦。”Get up, Yuan, and change the mat.'
曾元曰： Zang Yuan said,
“夫子之病帮矣， 'Your illness is extreme.
不可以变， It cannot now be changed.
幸而至于旦， If you happily survive till the morning,
请敬易之。” I will ask your leave and reverently change it!
曾子曰： Zeng-zi said,
“尔之爱我也不如彼。 'Your love of me is not equal to his.
君子之爱人也以德， A superior man loves another on grounds of virtue;
细人之爱人也以姑息。 a little man's love of another is seen in his indulgence of him.
吾何求哉？What do I seek for?
吾得正而毙焉斯已矣。” I want for nothing but to die in the correct way.'
举扶而易之。They then raised him up, and changed the mat.
反席未安而没。When he was replaced on the new one, before he could compose himself, he expired.
