伯高死於衛，Bo-gao died in Wei,
赴於孔子， and news of the event was sent to Confucius.
孔子曰： He said,
「吾惡乎哭諸？ 'Where shall I wail for him?
兄弟， For brethren,
吾哭諸廟； I wail in the ancestral temple;
父之友， for a friend of my father,
吾哭諸廟門之外； outside the gate of the temple;
師， for a teacher,
吾哭諸寢； in my chamber;
朋友， for a friend,
吾哭諸寢門之外； outside the door of the chamber;
所知， for an acquaintance,
吾哭諸野。in the open country, (some distance off).
於野，(To wail) in the open country
則已疏； would in this case be too slight (an expression of grief),
於寢，and to do so in the bed-chamber
則已重。 would be too great a one.
夫由賜也見我， But it was by Ci that he was introduced to me.
吾哭諸賜氏。」 I will wail for him in Ci's.'
遂命子貢為之主， Accordingly he ordered Zi-gong to act as presiding mourner on the occasion,
曰： saying to him,
「為爾哭也來者，拜之； 'Bow to those who come because you have a wailing in your house,
知伯高而來者，勿拜也。」 but do not bow to those who come (simply) because they knew Bo-gao.'
