夫晝居於內，When a man stops during the daytime in his inner (chamber),
問其疾可也； it is allowable to come and ask about his illness.
夜居於外， When he stops outside during the night,
吊之可也。 it is allowable to come and condole with him.
是故君子非有大故，Hence a superior man, except for some great cause,
不宿於外； does not pass the night outside (his chamber);
非致齊也、非疾也， and unless he is carrying out a fast or is ill,
不晝夜居於內。 he does not day and night stop inside.
