子柳之母死，When the mother of Zi-liu died,
子硕请具。 (his younger brother) Zi-shi asked for the means (to provide what was necessary for the mourning rites).
子柳曰： Zi-liu said,
“何以哉？” 'How shall we get them?'
子硕曰：“请粥庶弟之母。”'Let us sell (the concubines), the mothers of our half-brothers,' said the other.
子柳曰：“如之何其粥人之母以葬其母也？'How can we sell the mothers of other men to bury our mother?' was the reply;
不可。” 'that cannot be done.'
既葬， After the burial,
子硕欲以赙布之馀具祭器。Zi-shi wished to take what remained of the money and other things contributed towards their expenses, to provide sacrificial vessels;
子柳曰： but Zi-liu said,
“不可， 'Neither can that be done.
吾闻之也：I have heard
君子不家于丧。 that a superior man will not enrich his family by means of his mourning.
请班诸兄弟之贫者。Let us distribute it among the poor of our brethren.
