子路曰：“伤哉贫也！Zi-lu said, 'Alas for the poor!
生无以为养，While (their parents) are alive, they have not the means to nourish them;
死无以为礼也。”and when they are dead, they have not the means to perform the mourning rites for them.'
孔子曰： Confucius said,
“啜菽饮水尽其欢，'Bean soup, and water to drink, while the parents are made happy,
斯之谓孝； may be pronounced filial piety.
敛首足形， If (a son) can only wrap the body round from head to foot,
还葬而无椁，and inter it immediately, without a shell,
称其财， that being all which his means allow,
斯之谓礼。” he may be said to discharge (all) the rites of mourning.'
